Harriers Newsletter - August 2024

Welcome to our Harriers Newsletter!

As a club we've been trying to make some improvements on how communication happens and if you follow the Facebook page or are in the club Facebook group we're hoping you've noticed some of the content we've been putting together. In particular we're really pleased with the engagement we've had with our Medal Monday posts.

As part of this we're going to be making better use of other channels such as the website so that those who don't use Facebook are still included.

A monthly newsletter is going to be part of that going forward. We'll share bits and pieces for things that are going on around the club as well as any interesting news we come across.

If you've got any idea feedback on the newsletter or would like to see anything covered please email comms@nuneatonharriers.org.uk

In particular, we'd love for someone to suggest a name for our shiny new newsletter.

What's going on

WhatsApp Groups.

We've recently setup WhatsApp groups for improving co-ordination of our Senior and Vets Track teams.

We'll be setting up groups for Senior Cross Country Teams ahead of the season starting.

If you're a member of the club and want to be added to the groups drop an email to comms@nuneatonharriers.org.uk and we can get you added.

Committee

We're always on the lookout for people to join the committee. There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes and as with lots of things that rely on volunteers, not enough people to do it all so if you're interested in helping out we'd love to have you.

We currently don't have a volunteer coordinator or a social secretary for example so if that's something you could help with please let us know.

Next meeting is September 3rd 2024 at 20:30 in the clubhouse

Captains

We've recently appointed two club captains.

Their role is to be a visible point of contact for members as well as helping out with general organisation.

Linsi Scottow

Hi, I’m Linsi. I first joined Nuneaton Harriers when I was around 11 years old. As all juniors do, I tried my hand at lots of different events and found my love for throwing and jumping.

Through my school years I was lucky enough to be selected for several English schools Comps competing in Discus and then Triple jump before concentrating on Long Jump and Triple Jump where I won a couple of age group National titles. I was competitive until 2008 when a new career meant a move to London.

Fast forward to 2022, having moved back to the area and started a new role locally my daughter expressed an interest in trying athletics, so off to the Pingles we went. This turned into a real trip down memory lane for me seeing lots of faces I remembered from my childhood. Unfortunately, those faces also remembered me and in 2023 I got dragged (kicking and screaming) back into competing for the club again!

As many of you know, I am loving getting back into athletics and the competitiveness that had been hibernating for 15 years is most definitely back. You’ll mostly see me training with the jumps group and sometimes practicing throws.

I feel really honoured to have been selected as a Team Captain. I want to use this opportunity to help with encouraging others young and old(er) to get involved competitively and help promote the club and all of our fantastic achievements as much as possible.

Paul Smith

Hi, I’m Paul. I started running about 10 years ago as a way of losing a bit of weight and getting fitter with the aim of running a half marathon before I was 40. I duly completed the Coventry Half Marathon in 2015 in a time of 2:00.45 (a frustrating time that included a stop to tie a shoelace!) After the half marathon I’d been bitten by the running bug and carried on running a few miles a week around the streets of Nuneaton. As Covid restrictions were being lifted in 2020 I decided I’d had enough of running by myself and contacted the Harriers with the aim of nothing more than doing some more social running. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made and being part of the Harriers has allowed me to meet some great people and take part in some brilliant events.

I’m down at the club most Tuesday and Thursdays with the SG1 group, sometimes acting as run leader.  I mainly run the longer distances, with the mud and hills of Cross-Country a favourite completing in all 10 club events in the 2022-23 season. I also enjoy road races as well, especially the relays at either Sutton Park or Mallory Park but regularly take part in local events of 10k or greater in club colours. Last year I also completed my first full Marathon, running 3:37.00 on a very hot day in Richmond-on -Thames.

If someone had told me when I started running one day I’d be asked to be Nuneaton Harriers team captain, I’d probably have laughed but I’m very proud that this is what has happened and shows what can be achieved. I’d like to support everyone who joins the club to get the same enjoyment out of athletics or running that I do, and help to make the club an even more welcoming, friendly, and proactive environment so all those who enjoy running can flourish.

Volunteering

The club is hugely dependant on volunteers for everything we do. We're always thankful to anyone who can lend a hand, even if it's just for an hour.

We're hosting various cross country fixtures in the coming months

Juniors - 8th December 2024 and 9th February 2025

Seniors - 30th November 2024 (Mens)

If you're able to help out at all we'd be really grateful.

Olympics

As I'm sure you're already aware the Olympics are happening!

The track and events are taking place between the 1st and 11th August.

Here's a timetable of the events

Also worth knowing that the BBC only have limited coverage as they don't full access to the rights this time around.

There's an explainer for this on the BBC website

If you wanted to great wider access to the events as they are happening Discovery is the place to get them in the UK.

They have an Olympics offer happening at the moment if that's of interest
